had a lil misshap at work earlier... wrench slipped and i ended up punching a sharp corner of sheet metal.... got me right smack dab in the middle of the second knuckle of me index finger
bled like a stuck pig (turns out the guy supervising me is squeemish..lol..that was fun) anyhoo..the knuckle is pretty much a flap now... but didnt hurt much at the the time.. so ive just cleaned it and put a band aid on once i got the bleeding stopped.... replaced the band aid with a fresh one at the end of me shift
anyhoo several hours later my index finger is about twice as big around as me middle finger and hurts from the first knuckle down to me hand
on a scale of tis but a flesh wound to killer rabbit....how likely am i to need to miss some work time to get a doc to go look at that?

Take some anti inflammatory painkillers (ibuprofen) and get yourself down to A&E to get it looked at, even if it’s just a tetanus update.
Also wrap a bag of peas in a towel and nurse the knuckle for a few minutes at a time.

Just from what you’ve described I’d see a doctor. Aren’t doctors free in the Netherlands? Even if you need to take some time off work, I’d make sure just so there’s no infection and that there’s no damage to the tendons. Can you
fully extend or curl the finger? The amount of swelling you’ve described leads me to think that there’s more internal bleeding or internal
damage than you may think.
I could be blowing it out of proportion but any cuts I’ve had on my hand have always been a matter of cleaning the wound and replacing bandages as necessary.
Go see a doc.

Same thing happened while wrenching on a Jeep Wagoneer, wrench slipped and I punched the metal cooling fan. This was down to the knuckle bone and I cleaned it, Put a butterfly bandaid on then some superglue/nu-skin ( can’t remember but it burned something fierce). This is the scar some 11 years later. It was difficult to write with my right hand for about a week and half. I think if I would have went to the doctor, my recovery time and pain would have been significantly less . Plus the scar would have healed nicer but if you are into that sort of thing it will look like that when healed.

ill see how the hand looks by the time i get to work....but it has been more than 5 years since my last tetanus jab.... so it should get that done at least

Doctor, now. Make sure tetanus shots are up to date. I nearly lopped off the tip of my thumb at my last job with a bandsaw, needed 4 stitches.
Any injury involving metal needs to be checked - contaminants are everywhere in an industrial environment.

Highly recommend you see a doctor for an exam and x-ray. However, if you’re dead set on staying out of a waiting room, ice it, take ibuprofen, and make sure you have full range of motion without sharp pain. If you do have sharp pain, suck it up and get to a doctor, as you likely broke it.*
*disclaimer: I’m not a physician, so if your finger falls off, you’re on your own.

GET TO A&E!!!!
Get it looked at. Better safe than sorry. One of the last things you want is reduced motion in that finger for a longer period than necessary or joint pain in that finger when it gets cold in the future.

Wait what?
a&e comes out of my dedudictable
Deductible what?
Do you need insurance for A&E visits?
I always assumed Holland was the same as the U.K. when I lived there.
((thinking b ack, I’m glad I had an E111 form filled out)).

will do in the morning mate... walk in a&e in assen will just mean im sat there till morning waiting for someone.... or ill get transfered to groningen....
apreciate the concern.. but i think a few more hours spent sleeping wont hurt me more than spending them at my local little hospital waiting for a grumpy nightshift nurse to look at me

to clarify... a&e is free.. and you wont get billed for their time... but anything like x rays or shots will come out of your deductible

Make sure you do and don’t put it off.
Also make sure you add it to the accident at work book.

Lol.
Almost everyone (in the U.K. anyways), has a bag of peas (peas, garden peas, petit pois, etc...) in the freezer. They are more malleable than a large bag of ice cubes (that few people in the U.K. have).

Ye’, I’ve heard that depends on the NHS trust as some cover it and some don’t.

I did something similar once. Slipped on a caliper bolt and caught the brake dust cover. Mine wasn’t as bad as your sounds though.

It’s ideal because you can shape it more than ice, even crushed ice isn’t as good as peas.
But always wrap in a kitchen towel to protect from frost bite and alternate 5-10 minutes on, 5-10 minutes off.

er safe than sorry my friend. Sure, it sucks missing work, but you don’t want to let it get worse and find out you’ve done more major damage than you think.
